Starwood was absolutely fantastic! I was living in America for four years with my cats and decided to move home to Ireland with my two beautiful cats, Minnow & Espeon. My pet coordinator Cassidy was remarkable, organised every detail for me and my two pets. Handing them off in Chiacago I was so nervous; there even was an issue with the crates but Starwood saved the day so my pets didn’t miss their flight! The team was so easy to reach and helpful. Picking up in Dublin was very slick with no issues. Best of all I was updated on my pets’ whereabouts and conditions the whole way through with messages and pictures. We are all one big happy family again. I would recommend Starwood to anyone wanting to travel with their animals, especially international travel. I could not have done it without the team.

We choose Starwood to move our beloved pets from the United States to Ireland. We have a total of 4 dogs and 14 cats between our family members. I reached out to several companies. Starwood stood out from the very beginning. Ben followed up with us several times, and he gave us a comprehensive proposal, answering the million questions we had with patience. After doing the research we signed on with Starwood. Sarah was the assigned travel coordinator to our little crew. Sarah booked the vet, the transport and found a direct flight for our babies. Sarah helped us getting the crates airline ready, the day of the vet visit came and it was like clock work, Joe and Kristen were efficient, professional, and caring. The next day the transport arrived Jodi and Jason arrived with two air-conditioned vans prepared with beddings and paper work. After all 18 crates were loaded, I was kept in the loop every step of the way. Jodi and Jason truly care for animals and advocated for them until they were boarded. I received flight updates, photos of my babies every step of the way. When the dogs and cats arrived in Ireland they were received by Irene, who contacted me with pictures immediately and our babies were transported to their final destination to be received by my daughters. Overall I can only warmly recommend Starwood, everyone we encountered was absolutely outstanding, caring and professional. I would trust them with the care on my pets anytime.

## Moving to Ireland

2026 Pet Travel Guide to Ireland

### 2026 Pet Travel Guide to Ireland

From the rolling green hills of County Kerry to the lively streets of Dublin, Ireland is a wonderful place to call home—for both humans and their pets. But before your pet can enjoy the Emerald Isle, you’ll need to ensure all import requirements are met. Ireland is part of the European Union and follows strict pet import rules to maintain its disease-free status. Here’s what you need to know to get your furry friend safely and legally to Ireland.

 Pet Import Requirements for Ireland

### Pet Import Requirements for Ireland

Ireland is classified as a **“rabies-controlled”** country under EU law, meaning pets entering from the United States must meet several health and documentation requirements. Thankfully, Ireland allows pets to arrive **without quarantine** if everything is done correctly.

#### ✅ Microchip

Your pet must be microchipped with a **15-digit ISO-compliant microchip** before any rabies vaccine is administered. This microchip will be scanned upon arrival.

#### 💉 Rabies Vaccination

- Must be given **after** the microchip is implanted.
- Must be at least **21 days old** at the time of travel.
- Must be **valid** at the time of travel (not expired).
- Only **inactivated** rabies vaccines are accepted.

Your pet must be at least **12 weeks old** to receive the rabies vaccine and cannot travel until 21 days after that first valid shot.

#### NEW: Rabies Certificate Requirement for Direct Entry into Dublin

Ireland has added a **new, unique requirement** for pets traveling **directly into Dublin**.

In addition to an **original blue ink signature** from the administering veterinarian, the rabies certificate must include **one of the following**:

1. **Original rabies vaccine vial sticker**, affixed to the certificate and **countersigned by the veterinarian**, **or**
2. **Original clinic stamp** from the veterinary practice

⚠️ **Important Note:**
**Banfield Pet Hospitals do NOT have clinic stamps**, which can make meeting this requirement more challenging when using their facilities. Pet parents working with Banfield should plan accordingly and confirm documentation options well in advance.

### Other Vaccinations

Ireland does not require pets to have any vaccinations other than rabies. However, we recommend that you ask your new Irish veterinarian about locally-specific immunizations or preventative treatments your pet should get.

It is recommended that cats and dogs are vaccinated for the following. Do note that if your pet will be boarding, these vaccinations will be required.

- **Dogs**: DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus), Bordetella (Kennel Cough), Leptospirosis, CIV (Canine Influenza Virus)
- **Cats**: FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), Feline Leukemia

### Blood Tests

Ireland does not require any additional blood tests for cats, dogs, or ferrets unless your pet is traveling from an "unlisted" country.

If your pet is traveling from an "unlisted" country, then a rabies titer blood test will be required. The rabies titer test must be completed at least 30 days after their rabies vaccination and at least 3 months before traveling to the EU. This test must be completed by an authorized (USDA-Accredited) vet and the sample must be sent to an [EU approved laboratory](https://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/movement-pets/approved-rabies-serology-laboratories_en).

### Tapeworm Treatment

Unlike most EU countries, Ireland does require dogs to be treated for tapeworms prior to entering the country. Your dog must be treated by a USDA-accredited vet between 1-5 days before their arrival in Ireland, using a product labeled effective against tapeworms (Echinococcus multilocaris). The preferred product is praziquantel. This can be done either before or after your dog’s health certificate is endorsed by the USDA, but it must be reported on the health certificate.

#### 📄 EU Health Certificate

U.S. pets must travel with an **EU-compliant health certificate**, also known as an **Annex IV** form.

The requirements outlined below apply to pets entering Ireland within 5 days before or after your own arrival date, as long as you have fewer than 5 pets total. This is the case for most families. If you and your pet(s) will be traveling on the same flight or if you will be traveling separately but within the 5-day window noted, the appropriate health certificates can be found on the [USDA website](https://www.aphis.usda.gov/pet-travel/us-to-another-country-export/pet-travel-us-finland-malta-ireland-including-northern).

If you will be traveling with more than 5 pets, or if your pet(s) will arrive in Ireland outside the 5-day window noted above, then you must use a “commercial” health certificate. It doesn’t matter whether you’re making the arrangements yourself or our Starwood Pet Travel team is handling the details for you. The commercial health certificate can only be completed within 48 hours prior to your pet's departure.

The health certificate must be filled out and signed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and then endorsed (counter-signed and stamped or embossed) by the USDA APHIS Veterinary Medical Officer in your state. Belgium will allow the accredited vet to complete/sign the health certificate electronically, but the USDA must use a real-ink signature and emboss the paperwork. This document must be completed within 10 days prior to your pet’s arrival in Ireland. <https://www.aphis.usda.gov/pet-travel/health-certificates/non-eu/new-zealand-dog-cat-certificate-b-hawaii-guam.pdf>

### Import Permit

Ireland does not require a separate import permit for pets.

#### 🧳 Arrival in Ireland

- Pets must arrive through an **approved Travellers’ Point of Entry**, such as **Dublin (DUB), Shannon (SNN), or Cork (ORK)**.
- Upon arrival, your pet will be scanned for a microchip and documents will be reviewed.
- You must give **advance notice** to the Irish Department of Agriculture at least **24 hours before arrival** using their official pre-notification form (available online).

 Breed Restrictions

### Cat shipping Breed Restrictions

Ireland does **not ban** any breeds outright, but it has **strict rules** for certain “restricted breeds,” including:

- American Pit Bull Terrier
- English Bull Terrier
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- Rottweiler
- Japanese Akita
- Doberman Pinscher
- German Shepherd
- Rhodesian Ridgeback
- Bandog

Restricted breeds must:

- Be **leashed (under 2 meters)** and **muzzled** in public
- Be handled by someone **over 16 years old**
- Be **well-controlled** at all times

These rules apply in **public places** only—not in private homes or fenced gardens.

 Ireland Country Guide

## Moving from Ireland

 Pet shipping from Ireland

### Pet shipping

Planning to relocate with your dog or cat from Ireland to another country? International pet shipping involves careful preparation, regulatory compliance, and airline logistics to ensure your pet travels safely.

Ireland is considered a low-risk rabies country, which simplifies certain export procedures, but pets must still meet destination-country import requirements, airline regulations, and veterinary documentation standards. Depending on where your pet is traveling, this may include microchipping, vaccinations, health testing, government paperwork, and airline-approved travel kennels.

Starwood Pet Travel helps pet families move their pets from Ireland to destinations around the world, coordinating every step of the relocation process. Our team manages the logistics, documentation, and travel arrangements required for international pet transport so your pet’s journey is safe, compliant, and stress-free.

**How to Ship a Pet to Ireland**
A complete guide to pet relocation

 Approved animal species and breeds

### Approved animal species and breeds

Most international pet relocations from Ireland involve dogs and cats, which are accepted by the majority of airlines and destination countries.

- However, certain countries or airlines may restrict:
- Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds
- Hybrid breeds or wolf crosses
- Certain large or powerful breeds depending on import laws
- Exotic animals or non-domestic species

Each destination has its own rules regarding which animals are permitted to enter. Starwood Pet Travel reviews these regulations in advance and confirms that your pet meets all eligibility requirements before travel arrangements are made.

 Government regulations and authorities

### Government regulations and authorities

Pet exports from Ireland are regulated by both Irish authorities and the destination country’s import regulations.

Typical documentation may include:

- ISO-compliant microchip identification
- Valid rabies vaccination records
- Official veterinary health certificates
- Government-issued export certificates
- Import permits (for certain destinations)

Depending on the country your pet is traveling to, documents may also require government endorsement or certification prior to departure.
Because international pet travel regulations frequently change, working with a professional relocation service ensures your paperwork is prepared correctly and submitted on time.

How to ship a pet from Ireland

### How to Ship a Pet from Ireland

Shipping a pet internationally involves several coordinated steps to ensure compliance with airline and government regulations.

The process typically includes:

- Travel planning and consultation to determine the safest travel route
- Veterinary preparation, including vaccinations and health checks
- Documentation preparation, including export and import certificates
- Airline booking on a pet-approved route
- IATA-approved travel kennel preparation with identification labels
- Airport handling and customs coordination
- Final delivery or pickup at destination

Starwood Pet Travel manages these logistics from start to finish, keeping pet parents informed throughout the journey.

 Quarantine rule sand exemptions

### Quarantine rules and exemptions

Some countries require pets arriving from Ireland to complete a quarantine period before they can be released to their owners.

Quarantine rules depend entirely on the destination country. For example:

- Australia and New Zealand require government quarantine stays.
- Singapore and certain Asian countries may require quarantine depending on documentation.
- The United States and much of Europe typically do not require quarantine when documentation requirements are met.

Our relocation specialists review destination regulations and help ensure your pet meets all requirements to minimize or avoid quarantine whenever possible.

 Health checks and veterinary certifications

### Health checks and veterinary certifications

Before international travel, pets must undergo specific veterinary health procedures.

These may include:

- Microchip verification
- Rabies vaccination validation
- Additional vaccines depending on destination
- Blood tests or parasite treatments
- Official veterinary health certificates issued within required timeframes

Timing is critical. Some documents must be issued within days of travel, while others must be completed months in advance depending on the destination country.
Starwood works closely with veterinarians to ensure every requirement is completed properly and on schedule.

### F a q

## Questions, answered

### Is pet travel safe?

+

Yes, pet travel is safe with the proper preparation and precautions. Thousands of pets fly every year without issue. You can read more about pet travel safety [here.](https://starwoodpet.com/blog/will-my-pet-be-safe-on-an-airplane/)

### Should I sedate my pet?

+

NO. It is not recommended to sedate or tranquilize any pet that is flying on an airplane. This can negatively affect their breathing and respiration when they are up in the air at high altitudes. This can be even more dangerous for pets with pre-existing conditions or snub-nosed (brachycephalic) pets. Starwood will NOT transport any pet that has been sedated or tranquilized. Additionally, if the airline believes that your pet has been sedated, then they can refuse your pet for travel. You can learn more about sedation and air travel in our [blog post.](https://starwoodpet.com/blog/dont-tranquilize-your-pet-during-air-travel-theres-better-options)

### Where do pets travel on the plane?

+

Starwood only transports pets who are traveling as manifest cargo. This means that they travel on commercial flights underneath the passenger cabin in a space that is temperature controlled, pressurized, and oxygenated. Live animals travel beneath the pilot and the pilot must sign off on a manifest so they are aware of any pets onboard. Your pet’s travel kennel will be held into place by a thin netting that acts like a seatbelt to keep them safe and secure during takeoff and landing. [Learn more about where pets travel on a plane](https://www.starwoodpet.com/blog/where-do-pets-fly-on-a-plane).

### Will my pet eat or drink?

+

You should definitely ensure your pet is provided plenty of water prior to and on the day of their big adventure. Our team will also make sure that their water bowls are topped off once we check them in for the flight. Once pets are in the care of the airline after check-in, the airline staff will be sure to top off water as well. However, it is NOT recommended for pets to eat right before takeoff or during the flight. This can cause an upset stomach, which we of course want to avoid. Our team will not provide food for the flight and we do not recommend feeding them less than 4 hours prior to flight departure. If your pet has a layover, they will be provided more water and some food (depending on the length of the layover). Water will also be provided once they have landed as they are clearing through customs. If your pet will be boarding or spending time in quarantine throughout their trip, they will be provided food and water regularly. [You can read more about whether you should feed pets who are flying in our blog.](https://starwoodpet.com/blog/should-i-feed-my-dog-before-flying-what-else-should-i-know)

### How will my pet go to the bathroom?

+

If you have a dog that is traveling, our team will provide them with a nice walk and potty break prior to check-in at the airport. Once your pet is checked in, they must remain inside their travel kennel until they arrive at the destination. We do not let cats out of the travel kennel after we pick them up since you know they can be sneaky escape artists. Upon arrival to the destination, dogs will be provided with a walk and potty break before they head home to you. Again, cats will need to remain inside their travel kennels unless there is a safe and secure room to let them out. Litter boxes are not permitted to be inside the travel kennel so please be aware that sometimes your pet may go to the bathroom inside the kennel. As they say, if you gotta go, you gotta go. If your pet has soiled their travel kennel and there is a safe place to let them out of the kennel then we do try our best to clean the kennel when possible prior to delivery.
